In preparation for PARCC in early March, all of the third graders went to the LMC to practice logging into and taking the math test.
Our math topic continues to be fractions. We spent a few days reviewing fractions on the number line because it is a hard skill.
In social studies, the class focused on economy. On Wednesday, Mrs. Alfeo turned her classroom into a market and we became the sellers/vendors and consumers. A few students were accidentally given too much money to start the activity, but they showed honesty and reported the error. Golden tickets!
Another highlight was playing volleyball in P.E. Mrs. Romer showed us how to underhand serve over the net.
In music, Mrs. Penner taught us about the drinking gourd. We watched a Reading Rainbow video about it. The slaves were trying to escape using the Underground Railroad. The Big Dipper showed them which way was North so they could get to Canada and freedom.
On Thursday, the Ecology Action Center came to Oakland to teach third graders about the water cycle. We learned about how to protect our water from pollution. In the simulation, Bob was not a good citizen. He poured motor oil down the storm drain, didn't follow the directions on the fertilizer package, and refused to clean up after his dog!
Today, Mrs. Geggus helped us make Chinese New Year fans. We added designs using crayons and watercolors.
Also, a flyer was sent home inviting third, fourth, and fifth graders at Oakland to sing at an ISU basketball game. Forms and money are due by Monday, February 2.
Julia and Sathvik were the A+ Attitude Award winners this week. They visited Mr. LaFrance. Ady was the Scientist of the Week. She showed the class her hovercraft experiment using a CD, bottle cap, and balloon.
Enjoy your Super Bowl weekend! Most of us think the Seattle Seahawks will be victorious!
