Zap! Did you ever wonder how lightning rods and static electricity work? Well, you're in luck because we just finished a unit on energy. Static electricity is when electrons jump from one surface to another. That's why you get shocks when you touch a metal conductor such as a doorknob. To demonstrate, we charged a balloon by rubbing it on our hair and stuck it on the wall. Lightning rods help us so our houses are safe and we don't get electrocuted.
Yay! Spring break is almost here! This we week had fun dressing up for Spirit Week. The whole school could participate in PJ, crazy hair, dress to impress, decade, and career day. A lot of boys had on a tie and a suit and the majority of the girls put on dresses. Students wore tie-dye, wigs, glasses, hats, and more. We had so much fun!
Our class is doing great with multiplication and division timed tests. Once we pass a timed test, Mrs. Foley puts a sticker on a chart to show our progress. First, we do multiples of 2, 5, 10, 9, 0/1, 4, 3, 8, 6, and 7. For division the fact order is the same except there isn't a divided by 0/1 test. When we accomplish all the basics for a bonus we take times 11 and 12 then divided by 11 and 12. We like succeeding on timed tests!
In art class we made our own art fans out of paper, glue, wood sticks, paint, and crayons. We used any design we wanted. But you could not fold it in an out. Some of the designs were an American flag, a cupcake, an ocean theme, and a knight with a flying dragon. We took our "fan"tastic creations home and put them on display.
On Tuesday, March 15, third grade had a folk festival. We sang, did dances and plays. Examples of the songs we sang included "Funga Alafia," "Zum Gali Gali," "Ding-Dong Diggidiggidong," and "Four White Horses." We performed the play The Gingerbread Boy and Mrs. Alfeo's class did The Squeaky Door. A dance we did was "Chimes of Dunkirk." The audience learned the "Heel and Toe Polka." It was really fun and exciting. Our performance was as hot as a freshly baked gingerbread cookie! Ha! Ha!
Wow! So many students got prizes such as A+ Attitude. Maicy, Malhar, Shay, Ella, Harshita, Avery, and Alexis achieved this goal. One of the newer awards is Heart of a Hero. Kaydence, Richa Shree, and Semih have assisted and shown compassion toward others in our class. The newest award is for participation. Emily, Pranav, Landon, Nia, Gavyn, Lucas, Pierce, and Lexie earned it. Lastly, Malhar hit 1,000,000 RC words. We are very proud of these award winners.
This past month three people have done science experiments: Kaydence, Alexxa, and Malhar. Kaydence presented gak. Gak is like gooey play-doh or silly putty. Alexxa did tornado in a bottle. It really looked like a tornado spinning around. Malhar showed us an experiment that involved gravity. He put water in a glass and covered it with cardboard. When he turned it over, the cardboard square held tight! They did entertaining and innovative experiments.
