We just had our last Reading Counts assembly! Third, fourth, and fifth grade came and received prizes. A fifth grader named Henry has read 9,000,000 words! That's a new school record! There were even rewards such as kickball and Culvers. Some kids also get to go to Barnes and Noble to choose a free book. We hope to have more Reading Counts assemblies next year.
This week we met up with our families to show everything in our portfolios. It was called a portfolio picnic. Some families brought sack lunches for the students in third grade. Parents or guardians provided blankets or chairs to the garden where we were located. Third grade showed how we expanded in reading, writing, and math. Every parent loved that we improved in learning. All of us enjoyed the portfolio picnic.
On Thursday, a librarian from the Bloomington Public Library talked to 2nd and 3rd graders about the summer reading program. This program starts June 1st and ends on August 2nd. Children have to read 25 books or 15 hours to receive many prizes. Teens and adults can also sign up for the summer reading program. Every student received a bookmark with the information. This summer the program is called "Read to the Rhythm." We hope many people sign up!
Have you ever heard of Cinderella? On Thursday we visited Mrs. Davis's class to watch their readers' theater performances. They performed 3 plays: Rella's Wish, The Yellow Sparrow, and Smudge-Face. All of them had many similarities, but some differences. Rella's Wish was about a girl who went on adventures with a man named Fred. Yellow Sparrow was about a girl who had a fairy godbird, a yellow sparrow. Smudge-Face was about 3 sisters and the youngest sister was treated like a slave. But she told the truth unlike her sisters. A man named Strongwind married her. We thought all the plays were hilarious and fantastic.
Lately, many people won awards. Maddox, Ady, Noah, and Nathan passed their timed tests. They had one minute to finish their multiplication and division tests. Jarrin, Harris, Koby, Swastika, and Allison recently won art star awards. You can earn this when you make creative art. There were some Reading Counts awards as well. Teagan earned the highest RC average award, Swastika earned the most quizzes passed (187) award, and Nevaeh, Koby, Arion, Charlie, Maddox, and Haruka earned the most improved Lexile award. Finally, some students received an award for having the most RC points: 1st place - Sathvik, 2nd place - Swastika, 3rd place - Haruka, 4th place - Kai, and 5th place - Harris. These students did an amazing job and deserved these awards!
We're almost at the finish line! We can see it up ahead! Only a few laps until summer break!
