It was a nice day to go on a field trip. It was warm but the perfect temperature. It was a bumpy ride on the bus. We got name tags so people could call us by our names. Our class had two separate teams: red and blue. It was really fun. I hope we can go again.

In Sarah’s garden, we looked at many plants. We learned about different types: perennials and annuals. Perennials are plants that die in winter and grow back in the summer. Annuals live for just one year. Sarah’s originals are 100 years old. Sarah’s garden was so fun.

The class made butter in David Davis’s Mansion. First, the volunteer poured heavy cream into the glass container. Then we shook the jar a lot. After we shook the jar, we put the butter on crackers. Then we ate it. Yum.

We learned what the seeds are in different types of plants. Then groups discussed what the roots do. The roots suck up water for the plant. We also found out the plants breath carbon dioxide. It takes a few months for a plant to grow. All of us had fun discovering more about plants at the David Davis Mansion.

Another station we visited was located in the Davis’s barn. First, groups went into the barn and took a little tour of the stalls. Then we talked about the harness, the horseshoe, and how girls rode horses. Second, everyone was given a chance to pet the horse, Flint, one by one. He was bigger than we ever imagined. We got to see the horse play-nip the person who was presenting. Third, we got to see the horse’s teeth. The bit goes to the back of his mouth. Last, we found out that some horses hold carriages. It was really cool to learn about the barn and horse.

We liked washing clothes in the 1800’s. The volunteer taught us how to do it. This was difficult and fun. Our hands were cold and wet. Each team squeezed out the water from the sheets. It was challenging to put a big bedsheet on the clothesline. Some of us dumped out the soapy water. Washing clothes was hard work long ago!

We loved learning about the beautiful monarch butterflies. Monarch butterflies lay eggs in the spring. When larva come out of their eggs, they eat the shell and they chew some milkweed leaves. The monarch has a type of string to hold the chrysalis on a tree. Next, they make a J shape. Before they become a chrysalis, they shed their skin. After transforming, they come out and need a few hours for their wings to dry. And then they are butterflies!

We had a blast at the David Davis Mansion. We learned a lot from the volunteers. The mansion was built in 1872. Judge Davis was good friends with Abe Lincoln. One thing we learned was how to make butter. Groups pretended to live in the olden days where Sara and Judge Davis lived. It was out of this world to discover more about Bloomington history.
