Multiplication Treasure Hunt Written by Lyla, Rhyan & Safa Edited by Rithivika, Kharter, & Xander Argggh! One day in math class, we were pirates with Captain Multiply! First, we got our partners and papers and began to walk the deck to look for clues. After we thought we were done solving all of the multiplication challenges, Captain Multiply gave us a check. Once all of us were done, we told which of the 18 questions had the X to mark where Captain Add hid the stolen treasure. When we found the treasure chest, Captain Multiply gave us each 2 chocolate coins and 1 fake gold coin. What an amazing day being pirates! Science Explorations Written by Jeremiah, Xander, & Haydon Edited by Rhyan, Srinidhi, Blake, & Suhas In science we learned about plants, pollination, and fossils. Once we used toothpicks in different foods to find seeds. We used a magnifying glass to see the seeds in their containers. Science fruits like cucumber and tomatoes have seeds. Also, we know that the flower teases the bee. We explored fossilized plants by studying their prints. It was so fun. We hope to do it again. Math Games Written by Trez, Bryson, & Celestin Edited by Hailey, Spring, & Safa When everyone plays math games it is super fun, and we have learned a lot of multiplication facts. The class played many math games. Examples are Bingo and Tic Tac Toe. We had a lot of practice on multiplication. Sometimes a group can go in the hallway, but most stay in the classroom. Each group has three communication cups: green, yellow, and red. Red stands for no going well, and yellow stands for ok. Then Mrs. Foley can help us. Also, green stands for super good. Our class likes it when we play fun math games. Distributive Doctors Written by Cassidy, Benson, & Suhas Edited by Bryson, Lyla, & Trez In class we did a multiplication distributive doctor activity. First, we used counters to make arrays. Next, the class worked with popsicle sticks (which were our scalps) to separate the counters into two arrays. Then our class wrote on laminated paper with a dry erase marker. For example, a problem that we did was 15 X 8 = (8 X 10) + (8 X 5) = 120. Finally, we used red paint and Q-tips to make our own arrays. I was a fun experience to learn the distributive property of multiplication. Dictionary Donation Written by Hailey, Srinidhi, & Brooklyn Edited by Cassidy, Haydon, & Benson The class had fun when The Bloomington Rotary Club came to our classroom and gave us dictionaries! Four volunteers showed us how the dictionary works. We got our dictionaries and had fun searching for the word community. When we found community, a student from the class read the definition aloud. That day we took our dictionaries home. Every student wrote a thank you letter to show our appreciation. We all had fun meeting the volunteers and getting new dictionaries. Thank you, Rotary Club! Holiday Ornaments Written by Noah, Kharter, & Blake Edited by Bella, Brooklyn, & Leonard This year our ornaments were snowmen. We used different materials such as glue, googly eyes, and craft foam. It also included our photos. We hung them on the Christmas tree outside of Ms. Schrift's class, which is near the cafeteria. Every Oakland student made one to display. The ornament activity is always so fun, and students can't wait to do it again in 4th grade. Self-Portraits Writeen by Spring, Bella, & Sebastian Edited by Jeremiah & Celestin In art, we did self-portraits. Self-portraits are pictures that people draw of themselves. They are drawings that sometimes make you feel good. The face is an expression of your body. Most people like self-portraits, but some people sometimes feel self-conscious. The materials we used to make them are Bingo dobbers, watercolors, pastels, and Sharpies. We noticed different portrait styles because everyone is different. All of the portraits are stylish and awesome! We think most people enjoyed it. P.E. Obstacle Courses
Written by Rithivika, Likitha, & Leonard Edited by Noah & Sebastian It's been such a long year! We have been doing two obstacle courses in P.E. It is fun to exercise and work on balance and strength. The similarities of the winter and fall obstacle course is they have the same tools. Only the air balloons are different for each holiday. The Halloween decorations are sometimes scary. But the Christmas decorations are filled with jolly moments. We love having festive obstacle courses for P.E. and celebrating holidays! Opening Paragraph by Brooklyn, Trez, & Oliver It was a nice day to go on a field trip. It was warm but the perfect temperature. It was a bumpy ride on the bus. We got name tags so people could call us by our names. Our class had two separate teams: red and blue. It was really fun. I hope we can go again. Sarah’s Garden by Cassidy, Srinidhi, & Blake In Sarah’s garden, we looked at many plants. We learned about different types: perennials and annuals. Perennials are plants that die in winter and grow back in the summer. Annuals live for just one year. Sarah’s originals are 100 years old. Sarah’s garden was so fun. Making Butter by Hailey, Lyla, & Likitha The class made butter in David Davis’s Mansion. First, the volunteer poured heavy cream into the glass container. Then we shook the jar a lot. After we shook the jar, we put the butter on crackers. Then we ate it. Yum. Plants by Noah & Xander We learned what the seeds are in different types of plants. Then groups discussed what the roots do. The roots suck up water for the plant. We also found out the plants breath carbon dioxide. It takes a few months for a plant to grow. All of us had fun discovering more about plants at the David Davis Mansion. Barn by Spring, Haydon, & Benson Another station we visited was located in the Davis’s barn. First, groups went into the barn and took a little tour of the stalls. Then we talked about the harness, the horseshoe, and how girls rode horses. Second, everyone was given a chance to pet the horse, Flint, one by one. He was bigger than we ever imagined. We got to see the horse play-nip the person who was presenting. Third, we got to see the horse’s teeth. The bit goes to the back of his mouth. Last, we found out that some horses hold carriages. It was really cool to learn about the barn and horse. Washing Clothes by Kharter, Rhyan, & Bryson We liked washing clothes in the 1800’s. The volunteer taught us how to do it. This was difficult and fun. Our hands were cold and wet. Each team squeezed out the water from the sheets. It was challenging to put a big bedsheet on the clothesline. Some of us dumped out the soapy water. Washing clothes was hard work long ago! Monarch Butterflies by Leonard, Jeremiah, & Safa We loved learning about the beautiful monarch butterflies. Monarch butterflies lay eggs in the spring. When larva come out of their eggs, they eat the shell and they chew some milkweed leaves. The monarch has a type of string to hold the chrysalis on a tree. Next, they make a J shape. Before they become a chrysalis, they shed their skin. After transforming, they come out and need a few hours for their wings to dry. And then they are butterflies! Closing Paragraph
by Suhas, Rithivika, Sebastian, & Bella We had a blast at the David Davis Mansion. We learned a lot from the volunteers. The mansion was built in 1872. Judge Davis was good friends with Abe Lincoln. One thing we learned was how to make butter. Groups pretended to live in the olden days where Sara and Judge Davis lived. It was out of this world to discover more about Bloomington history. by Noah, Sebastian, Haydon, & Benson
This is us doing science. When we were working on magnets, every group was using a paper clip, key, penny, nickel, washer, and ring. Most of the stuff didn’t work. The magnet only attracted items made of iron or steel. Now our class is learning about plants’ roots, petals, stems, and fruits. It was super fun studying magnets and flowers. by Spring, Srinidhi, Brooklyn, & Blake
Fun Friday is when we have free choice activities. When it is cold or rainy, we stay indoors and play with magnets, Legos, board games, Brain Flakes, and more. If the weather is nice, we get extra recess. Sometimes we go outside and enjoy the new playground equipment. This is going to be a great year! by Likitha, Rhyan, Safa, & Suhas
Our teacher is tidy. We have assorted colored folders for each subject. Books are left and folders are on the right of our desks. We also have organized boxes. The books are sorted in different genres in our class library. The laptops are sorted by student numbers. "A place for everything and everything in its place" is a call and response in our classroom. by Hailey, Cassidy, Lyla, & Rithivika
In the Me Museum all of us learned more about each other! Every student brought three items and put up a small display on their desk. Cassidy brought a Cubs cart, a panting with a C on it, and a book. Rithivika got a pig, a frame that has a picture, and a plush pillow. Hailey displayed fishing lures, a pan for cooking, and a rock climbing harness. The purpose was to see similarities and differences. by Kharter, Trez, Bryson, & Bella
On the first day of school, teams got to build rockets out of different materials. Each table group constructed really cool rockets. We all built different rockets out of Legos, magnets, connecting cubes, Zoobs, and Tinkertoys. Everyone had fun building our rockets. by Leonard, Xander, Jeremiah, & Celestin
On the first day of school, we met as friends. Our teacher, Mrs. Foley, introduced herself to us. She showed us to some of the things in the classroom. We read a book in the morning called First Day Jitters. We also had extra recess. It was a fantastic first day of school! Happy summer everyone! Can you believe we have been out of school for one month already? I hope you are enjoying the time off and making the most of each day!
In early June, my family took a trip to Disney World. Last year was the first time our girls had been to Magic Kingdom, Hollywood Studios, Epcot, and Animal Kingdom. We were so excited to go again this summer. Can you tell that we like to take group photos with characters? Which one do you think would be best for our Christmas card this year? My husband votes for Chewbacca. Ha! What have you been up to this summer? Click on the "comment" link below to post a summary of your adventures. We'd love to hear an update! Love, Mrs. Foley |
