Several students won special awards this week. Rowan and Dezarey were our "A+ Attitude Award" winners. Hallie was the "Heart of a Hero" winner. She is the first one to get this new award.
This week in math we began our unit on time. We used mini clocks to help us on our first two lessons. We started with basic time telling like 9:00 and 2:30. As we went on, we began telling time to the nearest minute. If the hour hand is between 2 numbers, it is the lower number . . . except when it's between 12 and 1. In addition, third graders need to be able to say time in different ways (quarter til 12).
In writing we practice a new sentence pattern, parallel subjects. It is when you put three or more subjects at the beginning of the sentence. For example, "Sam, Tom, and Mike drew robots." We last worked on creating leads to hook the reader.
Global trade is the next topic in social studies. We are learning about how the world trades goods. Mrs. Alfeo led us in a yarn ball game to show how it works. When we were done, the string looked like a web.
In art, Mrs. Geggus continued teaching us about Chinese art and the Chinese New Year. She showed us a real example and we passed it around for a closer look. We made our own Chinese fans with crayons and watercolors. When we started putting the sticks on the fan, many people had trouble.
We are learning about the National Anthem in music. Our whole class watched videos of famous singers performing including Beyonce and Whitney Houston. Some kids are going to sing it at the ISU basketball game next Saturday.
On Monday our class started a tumbling unit in P.E. We've been taught how to do log rolls, egg rolls, inchworms, bear walks, crab walks, and duck walks. We had to use balance. All of the skills we have been learning will help build our leg and stomach muscles.
We also found out that our dear friend, Dezarey, was moving to Chicago. We were sad, but excited for her new adventure!
Our Valentine's Day party is later this afternoon. Everyone is so excited! We put our cards and treats into bags a few students at a time! A few students got candy grams as well.
Thank you for reading our blog each week! Have a fantastic Valentine's Day!
